Resolution on David Crane’s nomination to the Board of UC Regents

WHEREAS  David Crane has been recently nominated to become a new Regent of the Board of Regents of the University of California, and

WHEREAS  David Crane has publicly and explicitly said that collective bargaining are unfair should be questioned or eliminated because if gives “public employees power over their compensation and benefits” which he opposes, and has concluded that “Collective bargaining is a good thing when it’s needed to equalize power, but when public employees already have that equality because of civil service protections, collective bargaining in the public sector serves to reduce benefits for citizens and to raise costs for taxpayers” (February 27th 2011, San Francisco Chronicle), viscously and artificially opposing “taxpayers” to “public employees” falling in the worst kind of union baiting, and

WHEREAS David Crane is a multi-millionaire whose background has little to do with developing a public education system and expanding public services for California’s “taxpayers”, given that worked from 1979 to 2003 in a multinational financial company (Babcock & Brown) and served as a special advisor of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger from 2004 to 2010, assisting the project of privatization of public education, and

WHEREAS David Crane has been publicly advocating in numerous articles for cutting public sector wages and benefits, cutting public spending and for “partnering with private firms to deliver public services”(February 2008, THINK Magazine), which means that he encourages the privatization of public institutions like the University of California, and

WHEREAS  the University of California that is supposed to be a public institution does not have an either democratic nor transparent mechanism to elect its own Regents whose obligation is to ensure the public mission of the university, nor the mechanism to recall the Regents that fail to do their work, or that are proven to be guilty of conflict of interests and/or fraud,

Let it be RESOLVED, that the Berkeley Unit of the UAW 2865 completely opposes its nomination and considers the latter a threat to our entire union and its members and will mobilize against it, and

Let it be further RESOLVED, that the Berkeley Unit of the UAW 2865 urgently calls the Executive Board of the UAW 2865 to publicly oppose this nomination and organize a campaign against it, and

Let it be further RESOLVED, that the Berkeley Unit of the UAW 2865 will join the action of AFSCME 3299 on March 16th at Bancroft and Telegraph to oppose such a nomination, and

Let it be further RESOLVED, that the Berkeley Unit of the UAW 2865 calls for the urgent democratization of the University of California Board of Regents, and will join in these efforts the public education movement at UC Berkeley that has been mobilizing and taking action on this demand, and any other UC unions that want to accomplish this goal.
